Chiropractic Adjusting Techniques

As a Doctor of Chiropractic, Dr. Zagiba has years of training and experience in spinal adjustment. While Dr. Zagiba not only uses a multi pronged approach to get the patients better, his Chiropractic adjusting is diverse as well. There are a lot of inputs that go into making the choices of which adjusting techniques will be the most appropriate for you and may change as your body does as well. Dr. Zagiba is trained and has refined many different styles of adjusting to ensure that he can match the adjustment technique to your body and goals instead of the other way around.

Manual Manipulation

Manual Manipulation Adjustments are the hands on technique of adjusting the joints of the spine and body and for the most part produce a cavitation of the joint or more commonly referred to as “the cracking sound”. This sound is attributed often with a successful adjustment even though that is not always the case, this cavitation does not always occur because it is not a crack at all. The sound that is sometimes produced comes from gas bubbles that can form in restricted joints that have fluid in them. Degenerative joints can get to the point where there is not enough fluid or movement left to allow this noise to occur. However, manipulating these joints can still be very beneficial as it can still improve joint mobility and decrease muscle tension, especially when combined with regular corrective stretching and strengthening done at home.  Dr. Zagiba uses a blend of techniques including; Diversified, Gonstead, Thompson Drop and, Toggle Recoil as well as the Activator Method.

Diversified Technique

The Diversified Technique is used for patients of all walks of life. A Diversified adjustment is light and not at all forceful. Before your first adjustment, Dr. Zagiba will speak with you about your problem areas and determine whether or not a Diversified adjustment is right for you. If it is, and you’re ready to move forward, we can do so at this time. During a Diversified adjustment, you’ll lay face down on an adjustment table, and Dr. Zagiba will place his hands on your back, with one on each side of your spine. Next, a light push follows to realign the vertebrae. Most patients love receiving this type of adjustment because it’s gentle and quick.

Thompson Technique

The Thompson Technique is a full spine adjusting procedure. This technique checks muscle movements to make sure the spine and nervous system are free and clear of subluxations (bones out of alignment). It uses a sectional table that has movable pieces that is referred to as a drop table. The first step in the Thompson Technique is checking your extremities, spine and hips for any subluxations. A gentle thrust is applied to the joints, which in turn, sets the drop piece into motion and targets the specific joint or tissue. The Thompson Technique is extremely beneficial for bones and ligaments that may need additional care. Patients experiencing low back pain, hip pain or pelvic issues may benefit from receiving their adjustments on a drop table. I often get asked, “Why not always do it that way then?” The answer is a long and different one for everyone, but to try and answer it simply as possible, is that it comes down to three things; the health of your joints and surrounding tissues, goals of your personalized treatment plan, and personal preference.

Toggle Recoil Technique

The Toggle Recoil Technique helps address upper cervical problems in patients who may be experiencing a variety of issues. This extremely specific and focused adjustment is designed to remove subluxations (bones out of alignment) in the upper neck and reduce pressure on the brain stem and spinal cord. The first bone is called your atlas, and it protects the brain stem which is very important for many different functions in your body, along with where the brain and spinal cord connect at. When your atlas is misaligned it decreases the healing capability in your body.  A gentle toggle adjustment helps to take restore proper position to allow your brain and body to connect.

Pelvic Blocking Technique

The Pelvic Blocking Technique is used to help restore pelvic alignment through the use of body weight and wedge shaped blocks. This is an excellent option for patients that have lower lumbar fusions but need pelvic alignment. This technique sometimes is also combined with the Thompson Technique to increase effectiveness.

Activator Method

The Activator Method is a gentle, low-force adjustment style that involves the use of a hand-held instrument to manipulate the specified vertebrae or joint. Patients often refer to this as “the clicky thing”. There are patients who have a fear of the “cracking sound” the of a manual adjustment, or simply are uncomfortable with having a manual adjustment performed on them. This method can be used on its own or it can be used in combination with different adjusting techniques. The Activator Method allows for joint manipulation to occur by lightly and directly tapping the fixated joint back to proper mobility while you can lie completely relaxed. This is also a great option for patients with severe pain or muscle spasm, degenerated joints or discs, surgical or degenerative fusions, patients with compromised bone density and hyper-mobile joints. The Activator technique can be used to address the entire spine and allows for great results with gentle application. Patients of all ages can enjoy the benefits of an adjustment using the Activator Method. This technique is especially helpful for children who sometimes have trouble lying still. The adjustment is so quick and comfortable, children often look forward to their next visit! Older patients, or those with arthritis, osteoporosis, or other bone-weakening conditions find the Activator Method to be effective and gentle. The Activator Method is also great for working on soft tissue, trigger points and also can help with neuromuscular re-education.

Graston Technique

The Graston Technique, uses curved stainless steel instruments, that resolve and loosen adhesions that form in the fascia (muscle covering), and scar tissue, providing muscle pain relief and restoring mobility. Muscles have different fibers and as fibers become tight they build up toxins. These stainless steel tools glide over the skin of injured muscles, tendons, and ligaments to gently improve blood flow, increase range of motion, break up forming and old scar tissue, and alleviate tension. The Graston Technique can be a useful muscle injury repair tool when incorporated into a full treatment plan. This technique has been known to leave petechiae, a formation of tiny red spots and redness on the skin.  In the Graston Technique this is an indication of the technique being done correctly, but also that enough treatment has been performed.

Percussion Therapy

Utilizing Percussion Therapy Massage improves activation and balances muscle engagement from side to side, reduces muscular tightness and spasms and in turn reducing the physical stress placed on bones and joints. This therapy increases blood circulation which allows for more oxygen and nutrients to reach the muscles tendons and ligaments. Percussion Therapy can also be very beneficial in improving muscle recovery time and soreness.
